Description

The Burgage is an early 19th-century house with alterations from the 20th century. The exterior is roughcast and colourwashed, with stone dressings and hipped slate roofs. It has a plinth, rebated eaves, and four ridge stacks. Most windows are glazing bar sashes. The symmetrical north front, facing the street, features a central hipped projection and four windows on each floor, with the outer windows being smaller. The east front has three windows and a recessed porch with thin iron columns. The porch contains a six-panel door with an overlight and flanking windows featuring Gothic glazing bars. To either side of the porch are larger sash windows with Gothic glazing bars. The south side has a central sash window and, below, two taller sashes. A rear wing on the left side includes a late 20th-century conservatory and glazing. Inside, a dogleg cantilevered staircase has a cut string, turned balusters, and a moulded handrail. Hall doors have broken segmental pediments with finials. The right front room contains an autograph from Lord Byron on the wall.
