Description

Burgage Court is a house built in the late 18th century. It is constructed of brick with stone dressings and features hipped slate roofs. The building has a plinth, a first-floor band, rebated eaves, and four ridge stacks. It is three storeys high and has a layout in an L-shape, with five bays across the front and three bays on the side.

The east front showcases a central three-storey canted bay with three glazing bar sash windows, flanked by single Venetian windows. Above this, there are three smaller sash windows, also flanked by single Diocletian windows. The entrance features a central panelled door with an overlight, flanked by single sashes and further single Venetian windows. All the flanking windows have stone surrounds.

On the south front, there are two two-storey canted bay windows with dentillated cornices and glazing bar sashes, flanking central blank windows. Above these, two small sash windows are positioned beside a central blank space. The full-height ground floor sashes include fanlights. In the return angle of the two-storey rear wing, there is a two-storey semicircular projection with an attached hipped porch.

Inside, the entrance hall is panelled. The left front living room features similar panelling and doorcases with dentillated cornices. The dining room, located to the right front, has moulded plaster wall panels and cornice, along with a Classical wooden fireplace and hob grate. The open well staircase includes a panelled dado, cut string, a ramped and scrolled handrail, and stick balusters, while a minor dogleg stair features square newels. The roof displays an unusual exposed cross-beam structure at the corners.
