Description
34 Millgate is a former public house, previously known as the Duke of Wellington Inn and the Lord Nelson Inn, now functioning as a shop with adjoining outbuildings. The building dates from the late 16th century, underwent alterations in the late 18th century, was enlarged and remodeled in the mid-19th century, and was restored in the late 20th century. It served as a public house from 1819 to 1935. The structure is made of brick, featuring remnants of internal timber framing, with slate and pantile roofs. It has two gable ends, a single ridge, and a single side wall stack. The building is two storeys high and has a two-window range of glazing bar sashes. Below this, there is an off-centre two-panel door flanked by single glazing bar sashes, all of which have segmental heads. The rear wing, facing Huddlestone's Wharf, includes two renewed Yorkshire sashes. The adjoining two-storey outbuilding features a hatch and a loading door on the right, along with two garage doors to the right and a door with a small casement to the left. Inside, there is a renewed stud wall with a rubble plinth between the two front rooms, and a 16th-century stud wall in the rear wing. The front rooms have heavy cleft joists and span beams, with the beam in the left room being cambered. The right room contains an early 19th-century hob grate set in a plain stone surround.
