Description

The walled kitchen garden, located 100 meters north of Papplewick Hall, dates from the mid 18th century. It is constructed of brick and features a flat ashlar coping. The garden has a rectangular plan, with central gateways on the north and south sides; the southern gateway was altered in the mid 19th century and includes a scrolled wrought iron gate. Each of the east and west sides has a smaller central door with a segmental head.

Inside, there are transverse free-standing heated walls with a single stack, which support a single lean-to and three gabled stove houses on the north side, while the south side contains four lean-to glasshouses from the late 19th century. The east end features an ashlar sundial with an ogee head. Additionally, to the north outside the garden, there is a lean-to mushroom house with four bays, which is partly collapsed. The walls enclose an area of approximately three acres.
