Description

The Depository at Canal Wharf is an early 19th-century canal depository located on Bridge Place in Worksop. It is constructed of brick with a hipped slate roof, featuring ashlar dressings and stone hips. The building stands three storeys high and has four bays. The main west front includes an elliptical canal arch with a rusticated ashlar soffit on the left, and an elliptical arched doorway with a keystone and double-leaf door on the right, flanked by single casements. Above this doorway, there is a similar one with a metal hood supported by timber brackets, with three casements to the left and one to the right. The upper level features four similar casements.

On the right side wall, there are concrete stairs leading to a first-floor elliptical headed doorway with an ashlar surround, which is sheltered by a 20th-century close boarded canopy. The rear elevation has a 19th-century lean-to addition made of coursed squared rubble, which is one storey and one bay wide, with a door to the south and a garage door to the east, flanked by single casements and a window with segmental heads. Above this, there are four casements on each floor.

Inside, the building contains stables and features four cast iron columns, remnants of a windlass, and a kingpost roof with tenoned purlins. Throughout the building, there are numerous examples of Baltic marks on many of the cross beams, with the most common inscription being ‘KSXSV’. The ‘KS’ typically refers to crown timber, indicating the best quality, while ‘SV’ likely relates to the place or Baltic port of origin, such as Sverige (Sweden).
