Description

Cookoo Bush Cottage is a Grade II listed building located in Southrey, dating from the mid-17th century, with early 19th and 20th-century alterations. The cottage features a timber frame with a painted red brick casing and a thatched roof, which has a half-hipped east end and a west end with a rendered brick coped gable and kneelers. The front has two dormers, with a 20th-century casement on the right and a sliding sash on the left.

The cottage is single storey with an attic and has a three-bay front with a lobby entrance. The right side consists of two 17th-century timber frame bays, while the left side has a single early 19th-century bay. The doorway on the right has a plain doorcase and a plank door, flanked by single 20th-century casements, with a three-light 20th-century casement further left.

Inside, the room to the right has exposed timber framing with thick posts, straight braces, a sill, wallplate, and a large bressumer over a blocked fireplace. A cupboard door to the left of the fireplace originally led to a ladder for attic access. The original timber roof has been filled in with a flat ceiling halfway up. The room to the left of the doorway features a beamed ceiling, a large chamfered bressumer over a blocked fireplace, a single post in the northeast corner, and a cupboard door to the right of the fireplace, which also originally led to a ladder for attic access.
