Description
The Abbey Ruins at Tupholme Abbey Farm are the remains of a Premonstratensian monastery founded between 1155 and 1166. The standing structures date from the 12th and mid-13th centuries and are constructed from coursed limestone rubble with ashlar dressings. The southern wall of the canons' Refectory reaches almost to eaves level and measures approximately 75 feet (23 meters) in length. This single-storey building has a cellar basement beneath it.
Five tall lancet windows from the mid-13th century are still intact, along with part of a sixth window. Below these windows are the remains of the cellars, which feature broken vaulting, five small windows with rebates for shutters, and a low arched doorway. To the east, there is a rare surviving Reader's Pulpit, where one of the canons would read to the others during meals. The pulpit is wider than the wall, supported by a bay that projects to both the north and south. The entrance door to the pulpit remains, along with an adjacent trefoil-headed window, which is separated from the doorway by two annular shafts. The reader's seat is still present, along with a pair of lancet windows that provided light to the pulpit. Further east, there is a single bay containing a round-headed single light from the 12th century. In addition to the standing wall, extensive earthworks are visible on the site, which is designated as an Ancient Monument.
