Description
Peter Hancock's Hospital consists of four almshouses that are now used as cottages. Built in 1712, with later 19th and 20th-century alterations, the building is constructed of red brick with ashlar dressings. It features a steeply pitched, hipped roof covered in plain tiles, with six ridge stacks. The two-storey structure has an 11-bay front, with the three central bays projecting and topped with a gable that has 19th-century wooden barge boards.
The building has an ashlar-dressed plinth, an ashlar first-floor band, and quoins. There are four doorways located in the 2nd, 5th, 7th, and 10th bays from the left, each with segmental heads, overlights, and panelled doors. The central window is flanked by doorways, with two windows on each side and a single doorway and another window beyond on each side. Above, there are six windows, all featuring segmental heads and 20th-century wooden cross-mullion casements. An ashlar plaque above the central window is inscribed "Impensis Petri Hancock Armiger A.D. MDCCXII."
