Description
Birch Tree Farmhouse is a farmhouse that dates back to the 15th century, with some 20th-century alterations. It features a timber frame construction, wattle and daub, and painted plaster, with sections of painted red brick. The roof is thatched and includes four dormers: two on the west front, one with a casement window and the other with a sliding sash; and two on the east front, one a casement and the other a sliding sash. The house has a single gable stack and a single ridge stack, along with a long catslide roof to the north.
The farmhouse is single storey with an attic and has a four-bay front with a lobby entrance. On the west side, there is a doorway to the left featuring a thatch and log porch, leading to a partially glazed door. To the left of this, there is a 20th-century casement window, and to the right, two sliding sash windows with wooden lintels. The east side has a doorway to the right with a plank door, and a small fixed 20th-century window immediately to the left, with a sliding sash window beyond. There is also a very small fixed window to the right, and a 20th-century brick wall to the south with modern fenestration.
Inside, the farmhouse retains a complete four-bay timber frame structure with very large, broad posts, curved braces, and large wall plates. The roof from the 15th century is intact, featuring tie beams that are partially encased where the upper floor has been inserted just below, tenoned collars, a ridge beam, and unusual overlapping staggered purlins and rafters. Originally, this farmhouse belonged to Bardney Abbey, and several fragments of 12th-century moulded responds can be found in the garden.
