Description

This is a railway goods shed dating from around 1850, with some minor alterations in the late 19th century. It was designed by John Taylor for the Great Northern Railway Company. The building is constructed of red brick, with a Welsh slate roof and ashlar cope gables, featuring brick kneelers and a small gable stack. The north-west front has two large, segment-headed wagon entrances with double plank doors. Above, in the gable, is a small window with glazing bars. The side fronts have five round-headed blind arches, each containing a Diocletian window with iron frame glazing bars. The south-east front features two large, segment-headed wagon entrances; the left entrance has double plank doors, while the right is now blocked. A small, single-storey projection sits between the entrances, featuring a single glazing bar window. The gable above this projection has a small, off-centre window.

Inside, the original loading platform remains, along with a wooden grain loft supported on wooden posts. The loft’s width has been reduced to accommodate taller wagons. The building is notable as a rare example of an early, small-scale railway goods shed.
