Description
The Old Rectory is a former rectory, now a house, dating from around 1700 with 19th and 20th century alterations. It is constructed of red brick in English bond, has a colour washed finish, and features pantile roofs along with two wall stacks, one gable stack, and one ridge stack. The building is arranged in an L-plan and has a two-storey, irregular seven-bay front. The left three bays are slightly advanced and are topped with two shaped gables. These left bays also display two brick bands and oval sunk panels in the gables. The right bays feature a dentillated eaves course.
The entrance is off-centre, consisting of a six-panelled 20th century door with a plain overlight, panelled reveals, and a fluted 19th century Doric doorcase that includes a frieze enriched with leaves and a pediment with paterae above the archivolt. This door is flanked by single glazing bar sash windows. Above, on the left, there are two similar windows with a blocked opening between them, and all windows have cambered heads. To the right of the entrance is a 20th century half-glazed door, accompanied by two narrow and one wider glazing bar sashes. On the first floor, there are four glazing bar sashes at the eaves.
To the right of the front is a 20th century garage block. The rear features two gables that match those at the front. Inside, there is a very fine early 18th century staircase, which was moved from Boston in the 1960s. This staircase has three balusters per tread, each one different, including twist, barley twist, and fluted designs, all with knopped ends. The handrails are moulded and both wreathed, while the string is elaborately carved. The newels are fluted and topped with Ionic capitals. Originally, the beams were cased in, and there are two corner fireplaces with round backs.
