Description
A mid-19th century terrace of ten substantial small houses, treated as a unified composition. The name "Rock Terrace" is displayed in contemporary lettering at the north end, although the original house numbering continued along Scotgate. The houses are constructed of small coursed rubble with ashlar dressings and have Welsh slate roofs, hipped over the end pavilions. Eaves overhang on brackets, and each house features two windows in plain reveals. The two central and two end houses project slightly, with pilasters at the corners.
The terrace is two storeys and has a basement, except for the central block, which includes an attic storey set back from the eaves. This attic storey comprises two adjoining pediments, each above a small round-headed window; No. 4 retains glazing bars. A stone balcony is positioned over the doorways of Nos. 5 and 6. Each ground floor window has a cast iron balcony of a pleasing design. The entrances feature six-panel doors within round-arched moulded surrounds, topped with plain semi-circular fanlights. Stone stacks are grouped together. The first floor of the central block features windows arranged in a triple arcade.
The terrace forms a group with Nos. 29-31 on Scotgate. It also groups with Rock House and the Clock House on Castarton Road.
