Description

Rock House was built in 1842 for Richard Newcombe. This two-story mansion is constructed of stone and has a Welsh slate roof with stone stacks. The rusticated ground floor features a central four-panel door with a rectangular fanlight, flanked by plain pilasters. Above the door is a round-headed window supported by a massive stone balcony on brackets, with Corinthian pilasters in antis. Two full-height Corinthian pilasters support the frieze, cornice, and central parapet, which incorporates three round-headed windows and lions' masks. Two two-story pedimented bay windows are also present. Two narrow lights with glazing bars are positioned above a balustrade in the center. The ground floor includes wood and glazed rectangular bays with an anthemion scroll frieze. Rock House forms a group with numbers 51 and 52, and also with numbers 31 to 41 (consecutively) and the Clock House on Casterton Road.
