Description
Fern Cottage is an estate cottage that has been converted into a house. It was built in the early 19th century and remodeled in the mid-19th century, with some additions and alterations made in the late 20th century. The structure is made of brick with ashlar dressings and features a renewed pantile roof. It has two corbelled brick gable stacks with twisted coped double flues.
The cottage is two storeys high and has a three-window range. The windows, which have been reglazed with metal framed casements, feature chamfered stone surrounds and mullions. There are three two-light windows, with the central window lacking a mullion. A central door from the 20th century has a wooden surround and is flanked by three-light windows. To the left of the main structure, there is a late 20th-century single storey flat-roofed addition.
Fern Cottage was originally provided as housing for workers on the Belton estate by the Brownlow family of Belton House.
