Description
The Old Reading Room is a former village reading room that has been converted into a house. It dates from the mid-19th century and underwent alterations in the late 20th century. The building is constructed of coursed squared stone with ashlar and brick dressings, topped by a pantile roof that features a plain brick side wall stack. It is designed in the Tudor Revival style and is a single storey with an inserted attic, comprising a three-window range.
The facing gable is adorned with crow-stepped coping and a spike finial, and it includes a large three-light window with chamfered stone mullions and 18-pane sash windows. Above this window, there is a slit breather. The right side of the building has three renewed round-arched glazing bar windows, with the central window flanked by small single-light windows. Above these, there is a 20th-century gabled dormer. To the right, there is a reglazed porch with a coped gable. This building was originally a recreational facility provided for workers on the Belton estate by the Brownlow family of Belton House.
