Description

No.17, High Road is a cottage, originally built as an estate building around 1747, with alterations made in the mid-19th century and again in the late 20th century. It is constructed of coursed squared stone with brick dressings and has steep pitched roofs covered in renewed pantiles. It features two rebuilt brick gable stacks, one with a coped top. The cottage has brick quoins and tumbled gables. It is two storeys high, with a two-window frontage. The front has a double gabled design, with two two-light windows on the upper floor and two larger three-light mullioned windows below. All windows have 19th-century cast-iron lattice glazing bars. The right gable is blank and features a datestone inscribed "Jo. Nelson 1747". A 20th-century porch has been added to the left return. To the right of the cottage is an attached boundary wall constructed of coursed rubble, with gabled rubble coping topped with brick and extending approximately 30 metres. The cottage was remodelled as an estate cottage for workers on the Belton estate by the Brownlow family of Belton House.
