Description
The gateways and walls at Bass Maltings, built around 1900 and designed by A. Couchman, are made of red brick with stone dressings and cast iron elements. The central gateway is flanked by large square brick piers that feature moulded stone bases, flush stone bands, and moulded caps. Each pier is topped with an octagonal former gas light supported by a slender column and finished with finials. There is a pair of cast iron gates with vertical rails and diagonal cross braces. On either side, there are pedestrian stone Tudor arched gateways with stone coped heads and matching smaller cast iron gates. Beyond these, there are single lower square gate-piers with moulded stone bases and caps. Curved walls on either side have similar moulded stone plinths and stone coping. This structure is an important part of the nationally significant maltings complex.
