Description
Number 52 and the adjoining Newport Arch in Lincoln are significant historical structures. The remains of the inner face of the Roman north gateway date back to the 3rd century, while the adjoining house features elements from the 17th century and has undergone alterations and restorations in the 14th, 18th, 19th, and mid to late 20th centuries. The building is constructed with coursed squared stone facing and a rubble core. The adjoining house has a plain tile roof and two brick gable stacks.
The main archway includes a smaller archway to the right, which contains a pedestrian tunnel. On the north side, there are remnants of the inner walls of the gateway, approximately 10 meters long. The house features a central beaded plank door with a 20th-century tiled hood, flanked by single windows. Above, there are two additional windows, all dating from the 20th century.
Newport Arch is a remnant of the north gate to the Roman legionary fortress and later served as the north gate for the late Roman and medieval city. This site is also designated as a Scheduled Ancient Monument, County No. 4.
