Description
Blackwoods The Wool Shop is a pair of shops with accommodation above, dating from the early 19th century with some 20th-century alterations. The building is constructed of red brick, with some areas covered in colourwash, and features a pantile roof that is hipped to the south. It has a moulded wooden eaves and both single ridge and hip stacks.
The structure is two storeys high with a basement and has a five-bay front. To the right, there is a through passage with a segmental head. The shop front on the left includes a blocked basement window beneath a segmental head, and a doorway with a moulded doorcase, a bracketed hood, an overlight, and a partially glazed door. To the right of this, there is a shop window made of plate glass, topped with a continuous bracketed entablature.
On the left, there is another blocked basement window with a segmental head, and above it, a 20th-century plate window with a segmental head. The left shop front features flanking pilasters, a moulded entablature, and shutters. Another shop front to the left has a doorway on the right, also with a moulded doorcase, an overlight, a bracketed hood, and a partially glazed door. This shop front includes a two-light shop window with flanking pilasters, an entablature, and shutters. Above, there are four glazing bar sashes with segmental heads.
