Description
The Market Hall, located in Market Place, is a Grade II listed building completed in 1866 by architects Rogers and Marsden. It features a three-storey tower made of red brick with yellow dressings, topped with a Welsh slate roof that has a metal spire and weathervane. The tower includes a yellow brick moulded cornice, roof louvres, and a clock situated in an opening on the top storey. The first floor has a segmental-headed opening that contains two trefoil-headed lancets with a columned mullion featuring a foliated capital. Below, there are two lower lancet windows and an arched entrance with a pointed hood and finial.
The Eastgate elevation is particularly attractive, showcasing a gable end with a semi-circular light and a round-arched doorway with double doors that have ornamental hinges. Flanking the Market Hall, Nos 2 to 5 are two blocks of three-storey buildings, also constructed in red brick with yellow dressings. These buildings have hipped Welsh slate roofs, brick stacks, and iron finials at the corners. They feature yellow brick eaves cornices, arcading, and dentils, with three hung sash windows on each block facing both elevations. The first-floor windows are adorned with strings that connect pointed dripmoulds over round-headed windows. There are two doorways positioned in the chamfered angles of the buildings, each with round-headed fanlights beneath pointed hoods and finials beneath labels. The ground floors have modern shop fronts. Together, Nos 1 to 5, No 7, and the Market Hall create a cohesive group.
