Description
The Andrew Carnegie Public Library, designed by architects Briggs and Wolstenholme and dated 1903, is a Grade II listed building located on Church Street. This two-storey structure with attics is constructed of stone and features a slate roof. The Market Place elevation showcases a conical roof on an octagonal turret, flanked by two round windows and a clock beneath a gable. The first floor has three windows, including one with four lights flanked by two lights, while the ground floor has three tall windows and two basement windows with iron guards. A cornice separates the attic from the first floor.
On the Church Street elevation, there are four round-headed windows. The first floor features three windows with four lights, designed with mullions and transoms, along with a six-light window beneath a goblet-shaped niche, with additional niches between the windows. Above a three-light fanlight, there is a six-light window above a set-back door that is accessed by three steps. The Andrew Carnegie Public Library is part of a group of buildings that includes the Town Hall, the premises occupied by the Tourist Information Office, No 4, and Church Court, along with Nos 6 to 12 (even).
