Description

The Anglican Cemetery Chapel, built in 1879, is located on Cemetery Road in North Somercotes. This chapel features red brick construction, with some areas of stock brick and limestone ashlar dressings. It has steeply pitched hipped slate roofs with stock brick eaves and a rectangular plan that culminates in an apsidal south end.

The chapel's north front has three bays and is supported by four regularly spaced two-stage buttresses with ashlar set-offs. The central bay projects slightly and is topped with a gable that includes a tall bellcote, which has a steeply pitched gable and a pointed bell opening adorned with a hood mould and bell, along with stock brick decoration. The central doorway features a pointed head with a moulded double chamfered surround, a hood mould, and a plank door. Above the doorway is a plaque inscribed with 'AD 1879'.

Flanking the doorway are single pointed windows with stock brick surrounds and ashlar hood moulds, which are complemented by stock brick bands above and below. Both the east and west sides of the chapel have two stock brick bands and two pointed windows with similar surrounds and hood moulds, interspersed with three two-stage buttresses featuring ashlar set-offs. The apsidal south end includes two stock brick bands and three pointed windows with stock brick surrounds and ashlar hood moulds, alternating with four two-stage buttresses with ashlar set-offs.

Inside, the chapel has two ashlar bands running around its interior and a multi-timbered hip roof, along with a contemporary altar, pulpit, and pews.
