Description
Centenary Methodist Chapel is a building constructed in 1837. It features red brick with a front made of red stock brick in Flemish bond and has ashlar dressings. The roof is covered with concrete tiles. The chapel is rectangular in shape with a canted apse for the organ chamber at the east end. It stands two storeys high and has three symmetrical bays. The building includes a plinth and angle pilasters.
There are three steps leading to a round-headed entrance that has double panelled doors and a fanlight with glazing bars, all beneath a rubbed-brick arch. This entrance is flanked by round-headed windows with sills and glazing bars beneath brick arches. A first-floor band is present, and the first floor features a central Venetian window with ashlar dressings, flanked by round-headed windows similar to those on the ground floor. Above this is a narrow band. The gable has a central rectangular recessed stucco panel flanked by smaller similar panels, with a central oval tablet above that has a moulded border and the date.
The sides and rear of the chapel have two bays with segmental and round-headed windows. Inside, there are fluted octagonal columns that support a gallery on all four sides, featuring a coved underside and a panelled front with a moulded plinth, fluted pilasters, and a corniced rail. The large panelled pulpit and staircase have a balustrade made of slender column-on-vase balusters with square knops. An elliptical arch with pilasters leads to the organ chamber. The ceiling is adorned with a ribbed plaster cornice and a central moulded rose surrounded by smaller roses. The lobby has twin staircases leading to the gallery, featuring turned balusters.
