Description

The Church of St Peter is a parish church largely dating to the late 12th century, with significant alterations in the 15th century, 1761, 1853, and 1876. It is constructed of greenstone, ironstone, and limestone rubble, with limestone ashlar detailing, and red brick. The roofs are tiled with pantiles, featuring brick and stone coped gables, an eastern cross finial, and decorative ridge tiles. The church comprises a nave, a west bellcote, and a chancel.

The west front was rebuilt in 1853 using red brick and incorporates two-stage ashlar and brick buttresses flanking a pointed brick arch above which sits a gabled bellcote. The north side of the nave displays the outlines of four blocked north arcade bays, with two bays to the west delineated by red tiles. A window to the east, dating to 1761, is characterised by a round red brick head and wooden Y tracery. The north side of the chancel is plain. The east end was restored in 1876 and features two-stage angle buttresses and a 15th-century east window with a flattened triangular head containing two round cusped heads with 19th-century tracery. The south side of the chancel has a 19th-century lancet window to the east, and a 15th-century window to the west with a flattened triangular head, two lights, and contorted round, cusped heads. A small 19th-century lancet sits below to the west. The south side of the nave features two 18th-century round-headed windows with red brick heads and wooden Y tracery. A blocked moulded, pointed doorway is located to the west, followed by a 1761 doorway, featuring a pointed head, chamfered surround, and a plank door. A stone inscription above the doorway reads "ID 1761 CW".

Inside the nave, four bays of the north arcade are partially exposed, showing double chamfered pointed heads, semi-circular piers with beaded capitals, and 19th-century corbelled responds. The late 12th-century chancel arch has a pointed, double-chamfered head and semi-circular responds with fillets and plain moulded capitals. An outline of two north arcade bays is visible within the chancel, featuring pointed heads and corbelled responds. A corbel is present in the east wall, and a 19th-century aumbry is located below the east window in the south wall. The east window is set within a large pointed archway, and two windows to the west in the south chancel wall are set in a large, pointed, blocked opening. The nave has an early 18th-century tie beam roof, while the chancel features a 19th-century roof. The church contains pews dating from 1853, a plain 12th-century drum font, a fragment of an 11th-century wheel cross exhibiting upper interlace decoration and a crude crucifixion scene, a late 18th-century pulpit with round headed panels, and a brass memorial to John Langholme, who died in 1515, depicting him and his wife kneeling with their five sons and nine daughters.
