Description
The Leverton War Memorial is situated on the north side of Sheepgate, surrounded by a hedge and clipped conifers, with a wrought iron gate at the front. This memorial stands 3.7 meters tall and is made of Portland Stone in the form of an obelisk. It features a three-stepped base that is square in shape and a two-stage corniced plinth from which the four-sided tapering obelisk rises.
The plinth has inscriptions in incised lettering on two sides. On the southern face, facing the road, the inscription reads: "ERECTED BY THE PARISHIONERS OF LEVERTON IN MEMORY OF OUR GLORIOUS DEAD WHO LAID DOWN THEIR LIVES IN THE GREAT EUROPEAN WAR, 1914-1919" followed by eight names, and below that, "1939-1945" with three names, dated 16 April 1973. The eastern face also bears an inscription that reads: "ERECTED BY THE PARISHIONERS OF LEVERTON IN MEMORY OF OUR GLORIOUS DEAD WHO LAID DOWN THEIR LIVES IN THE GREAT EUROPEAN WAR, 1914-1919" followed by nine names.
