Description
Heronshaw Hall is a house built in 1576, with alterations and extensions made in the 17th century, and extensive remodelling in the late 18th century, along with minor changes in the 20th century. The building is constructed of red brick, primarily in English bond, and features slate roofs, a single gable, two triple ridges, and a single brick wall stack. It has a T-plan layout, with a parlour cross wing. The house is two storeys high and has an irregular five-bay front, with the left bay advanced and separately gabled.
The exterior includes a chamfered plinth and a moulded and chamfered first floor offset, now covered by a slate course, with a gable band on the left. The entrance features an off-centre 18th-century six-panel door set in a plain brick surround. To the left of the door is a glazing bar sliding sash window, and to the right are two glazing bar windows, one a casement and the other a sash. On the first floor, there are three glazing bar sashes, a fixed light, and a glazing bar casement, all with segmental brick heads. Between the right-hand pair of upper windows is a terracotta tiled date plaque reading "1576," along with the initials WB IB, above a shield, framed by a stepped cruciform terracotta surround.
The left side of the parlour wing has three glazing bar sashes on the ground floor and four above. Inside, the hall retains moulded beams, a brick fireplace with a timber bressumer, and some reset panelling. The building is also known as Massom Hall.
