Description
Heronshaw Cottage is a cottage dating from the mid-17th century, with alterations made in the 18th and 20th centuries. It is constructed of red brick, partly in English bond, and features a pantile roof with raised brick coped tumbled gables and a single ridge stack. The building has a lobby entry plan and is a single storey plus garret, with a three-bay front that includes a dentillated eaves course. The central door, which is from the 20th century, is flanked by two 20th-century three-light casement windows, all of which have brick segmental heads. The door is set within the blocking of a wide archway that has an 18th-century character and contains three reused 16th-century stone tiles, featuring relief decorations of two fleur de lys and a lion's head. To the left, there is a single-storey, single-bay recessed 18th-century service block that includes a single fixed light. At the rear, there is a lean-to outshot. The cottage is also known as Massom Cottage.
