Description

The Sutton Scotney War Memorial stands on the south side of the road, opposite Victoria Hall and Witts Cottage. It is situated within a paved, semi-circular area enclosed on three sides by a roughly one-meter high wall made of brick and flint, topped with a coped stone. Benches are integrated into three sections of the wall that are set back from the enclosure. Spiked chains are supported by posts in front of the memorial. A grass verge edged with bulbs provides a setback from the roadside.

The approximately five-meter tall memorial is constructed from limestone, and comprises a hexagonal lantern topped with a small sphere on a pinnacle. Three small corbels support the lantern on the cross shaft. The front face of the lantern bears the inscription “LEST YE FORGET,” the west face a carved cross, and the east face a carved wreath. The cross shaft is hexagonal in section and stands upon a three-stage plinth. The middle and lower stages of the plinth are wider than the upper stage, and carry the principal inscriptions, with a later inscription added in 2007 on the upper stage. The whole structure stands on a low, hexagonal step. All lettering is incised and painted black.

Two inscriptions are carved into the middle stage of the plinth, starting on the west-facing side and proceeding around all six faces to finish on the east-facing side. The first inscription reads: "THESE MEN/ FROM THIS/ PARISH / AT THE/ CALL/ OF DUTY / MADE/ THE GREAT/ SACRIFICE / FOR GOD AND/ THE RIGHT / AUGUST/ 1914/ SEPTEMBER 1939 / NOVEMBER/ 1918/ AUGUST 1945”. The second inscription, located below the first, reads: “THIS MONUMENT / IS ERECTED BY / THOSE WHO HONOUR / THEIR MEMORY / AND HOLD IT DEAR”.

The lower stage of the plinth records the names of the commemorated individuals, inscribed in alphabetical order around all six faces: 48 from the First World War and 11 from the Second World War.
