Description
The Coach and Horses is a public house located on Oxford Road in Sutton Scotney. It dates from the 17th century and early 18th century, featuring a mix of timber frame with brick infill and colour-washed brickwork, topped with plain tiled roofs. The building is L-shaped, with the 18th-century section facing Oxford Road and the 17th-century section situated behind and to the left, along with later infill between them.
The 17th-century part has been refronted in the early 19th century and consists of two storeys with a four-window range. Centrally located are a pair of doors, each accompanied by a single casement window, and a timber-tiled porch above. To the right, there is an unequal three-light casement window, with a blocked window and door to the left. Above, there are four regular window openings, three of which contain small sashes, while one is blocked. The roof is steeply pitched, featuring a ridge stack to the left of the center.
The 18th-century section is a three-bay, two-storey structure built on a brick plinth. Its facade is regular, with a door on the left that is a large original six-panelled door adorned with an unusual fretwork fanlight. To the right are two 12-pane sash windows, and there is a string course at the first floor level. The upper floor has three six-pane sashes, with the center window having a raised plain brick surround. The roof is also steeply pitched, with large external gable stacks at each end. A mid-18th-century bay has been added to the left, featuring two sashes that link the two buildings.
Inside the 18th-century section, there is an early 18th-century staircase with a moulded handrail, and in the room to the right, there is a niche with a reeded softwood surround.
