Description

The Starlight Room and entrance block comprise a 1963-1964 dancehall with an earlier entrance block dating to 1960, situated to the north. The buildings are constructed of brick in stretcher bond, with a tiled roof on the main structure and corrugated sheeting on the roof of the Starlight Room.

The complex is arranged as a series of single-storey buildings, with the entrance block at the centre and the north-south oriented Starlight Room positioned to the south. The west-facing principal elevation features a central entrance block with six glazed double-doors, sheltered by a projecting flat canopy with glazing above and below. A link block connects the entrance block to the Starlight Room, featuring a wide-arching roof.

The entrance block leads to a lobby with a tiled northern wall, which in turn opens onto an entrance foyer. Further east are toilet facilities and a canteen.

The Starlight Room is a vast, double-height hall, containing a large sprung maple dancefloor measuring approximately 90 feet by 50 feet, designed to accommodate dances for up to 2000 people. A bar with timber cladding occupies the northern end of the hall, with a centrally located stair providing access to a gallery above. A stage occupies the southern end of the room, originally featuring a circular revolving floor, now non-functional. A partition originally separating the stage to allow bands to set up out of sight has been removed. A first-floor gallery runs along the west, east, and north sides of the room, supported by slender piers with timber cladding and featuring alternating bronzed lozenge balusters. Original fixed bench-seating remains on the gallery and in the areas below. Three open-tread stairs with matching balustrades provide gallery access at the north, west, and east ends of the room. A control room, containing lighting and controls for the revolving stage, is located at first-floor level within the gallery, to the right of the stage. Backstage areas with dressing rooms are accessible from the left of the stage. Doors at the west-facing end of the room lead to the low-ceiling Richmond Bar.

The listing excludes the Richmond Bar and the original dancehall to the north of the entrance hall, which has been converted into a bingo hall.
