Description
The Whitwick War Memorial, built in 1921, is made of Cornish grey granite, bronze, and granolithic concrete. It features a wheel head cross on a three-tiered plinth with chamfered edges, resting on a six-stepped base. The upper five tiers are octagonal in shape, while the lowest tier is circular. The plinth displays inscriptions on cast bronze plaques.
The inscriptions include: on the upper tier of the 6, 3, and 12 o'clock faces, "IN PROUD MEMORY OF / THE MEN OF WHITWICK / WHO GAVE THEIR LIVES / IN THE WAR / 1914 - 1918"; the middle tier lists names; and on the lower tier at the 6 o'clock face, "THEIR NAME LIVETH FOR / EVERMORE." On the 9 o'clock faces, the upper tier reads, "IN PROUD MEMORY OF / THE MEN OF WHITWICK / WHO GAVE THEIR LIVES / IN THE WAR / 1939 - 1945," with names on the middle tier. The step riser faces, from bottom to top, are marked with the years "1914," "1915," "1916," "1917," and "1918."
