Description

The Old Vicarage is a house with origins from the 17th century or earlier, likely altered in 1714, as indicated by a datestone above the front door. It was refenestrated in the early 19th century in a Gothick style and extended later in the 19th century. The building is constructed of Charnwood granite rubble with quoins at the front, brick at the rear, and features a thatched roof with ridge and end stacks. The main range has two storeys and includes a cross-wing to the east, a four-centred doorway, and a single-storey canted bay window that was originally thatched but is now tiled. The later 19th-century extension to the west has a second doorway and a bay window that match the original style and fenestration. There is a gabled wing and a conservatory at the rear. Inside, the house has reed and plaster floors and retains some 17th and 18th-century doors, along with stained and painted window glass, including one panel dated 1830. A 18th-century brick coach house and hay-loft are located at the rear. The front garden is enclosed by 19th-century Charnwood granite rubble walls, featuring a central round-headed gateway that is now blocked. Notably, Dorothy Wordsworth worked here as a housekeeper, and her drawing of the house, titled "Whitwick Parsonage," is housed in the Wordsworth Museum at Grasmere.
