Description

Oakley Wood Cottage is a house that was formerly a keeper's cottage for the Garendon Estate. It dates from the 18th century and early 19th century, with some 20th-century alterations. The building is constructed of brick on a granite rubble plinth and features a thatched roof. There are two brick chimneys, one square chimney located between the left bays and a smaller one between the right bays. The cottage has a U-plan layout, with the left rear wing added or rebuilt in the 19th century, and its left wall rebuilt again in the 20th century.

The cottage is 1.5 storeys high and has three bays. It features 19th-century barred wooden windows, mostly three-light, but with a two-light window on the ground floor of the central bay. The upper windows are semi-dormers with thatch eyebrows. The window in the left bay and the first-floor window on the right are horizontal sashes, while the others are casements. The central ground floor window has a segmental head, with a 20th-century single light window adjacent to the left. There is a 20th-century glazed door between the left bays, which is sheltered by a 20th-century thatched porch. An outshot is present at the rear of the right bay, and there is a 20th-century verandah at the rear center. The interior includes some re-used old beams, contributing to its picturesque character.
