Description
The Chinese Shishi is an ornamental garden sculpture located in the east half of the Chinese garden at Whatton House. It dates from the late 19th century and is of Chinese or Japanese origin. The sculpture depicts a bronze beast featuring a scrolled mane and tail, along with clawed feet, and it rests on a roughly hewn stone slab. This piece is part of a collection of ornaments gathered for the garden by the first Lord Crawshaw around 1890 to 1900.
