LONG WHATTON WHATTON HOUSE GROUNDS SK 42 SE 5/214 Figure standing on a demon, with parasol, in Chinese garden GV II

Ornamental garden sculpture, under a large parasol. Late C19. Of Chinese or Japanese origin. Bronze status of a figure in armour, standing on a smaller figure and holding a small pagoda. Said to be either a Buddhist guardian stand- ing on a demon, or a deity crushing the mischief out of a child. Roughly hewn stone base. Green-painted metal parasol. Feature of Chinese garden laid out by the first Lord Crawshaw c1890-1900. (Country Life, February 21st 1985, p.456-7)
