Description
This ornamental garden sculpture, dating from the late 19th century, is located in the grounds of Whatton House. It features a figure in armor, believed to be of Chinese or Japanese origin, standing on a smaller figure, which is interpreted as either a Buddhist guardian standing on a demon or a deity crushing the mischief out of a child. The figure holds a small pagoda and is set on a roughly hewn stone base. It is sheltered by a green-painted metal parasol. This sculpture is a notable element of the Chinese garden designed by the first Lord Crawshaw around 1890 to 1900.
