Description
The Chinese Koro with Three Wise Men is a garden ornament located in the grounds of Whatton House, dating from the late 19th century. It is believed to have Chinese or possibly Japanese origins and is made of bronze. The incense-burner features a three-legged cauldron with horned cap handles and relief carvings depicting Taoist immortals riding various beasts. The lid is pierced and topped with three small statuettes of wise men. It stands on an octagonal stone base, which is partly smoothly dressed and partly rough. This piece is part of a collection of ornaments gathered for the garden by the first Lord Crawshaw around 1890 to 1900.
