Description
LONG WHATTON WHATTON HOUSE GROUNDS SK 42 SE 5/211 Tall tiered vase at centre of Chinese garden GV II
Garden ornament. Late C19. Of Chinese or Japanese origin. Bronze, on hexago- nal stone base. Lower part of ornament has scrolled legs on a mask-head base, enclosing a spikey dragon. On this are 6 seated elephants with raised trunks, surrounding the base of a large vase covered with figurative relief decoration. 2 more spikey dragons climb up the sides of the vase, and on top is an eagle with widespread wings. One of a series of ornaments collected for the garden by the first Lord Crawshaw c1890-1900. (Country Life, February 21st 1985, p.456-7.)
