Description
The Scalford War Memorial is a First World War memorial that was erected in 1920, with additional names added after the Second World War. It is made of grey Cornish granite and stands approximately 2.3 meters high. The memorial features a square-section pillar with the word "HIS" carved in relief within a small circle. It has a deep cornice and a moulded capstone that displays an incised cross on the front face, all supported by a two-tiered, heavily-moulded base. The front side of the pillar has a polished face that includes the inscription commemorating those who died in the First World War. Both the front and back faces of the pillar feature inscriptions in leaded lettering.
The inscription reads: "HIS// TO THE GLORY OF GOD AND IN/ PROUD AND GRATEFUL MEMORY/ OF THOSE WHO DIED FOR THEIR/ COUNTRY IN THE GREAT WAR/ 1914 – 1918/ (NAMES)/ ERECTED BY SUBSCRIPTION 1920// TO THE GLORY OF GOD AND IN/ PROUD AND GRATEFUL MEMORY/ OF THOSE WHO DIED FOR THEIR/ COUNTRY/ 1939 – 1945/ (NAMES)."
