Description
28 and 30 Church Street are a pair of cottages built in the mid to late 19th century, with later 20th-century additions and alterations. They are constructed from red brick, featuring buff brick dressings, and have a tiled roof with ridge and tall end stacks. The cottages are two storeys high with attics beneath a gabled roof. The front has a symmetrical arrangement of windows, with four casements on the first floor and six on the ground floor. The casements have ogee-headed surrounds and stepped glazing bars that create a simple, Chinese-style pattern. There are also blocked ogee-headed windows in the gables. The front features four painted boarded doors, each with ogee-headed surrounds; the two central doors are flanked by two small square windows.
These cottages are designated for their well-preserved external decorative details, making them a good example of the high Victorian Gothic style. The high level of survival of architectural and decorative detail, along with their historical interest, qualifies them for listing as buildings of this type and date.
