Description
The Burbage War Memorial is a First World War memorial that was erected in 1921, featuring sculpture by TS Lord and Sons, with additional names added after the Second World War.
The memorial consists of an approximately 1.8-meter tall marble figure of a First World War infantry soldier, depicted in a relaxed pose, leaning on his downturned rifle. This figure stands atop a 2.5-meter tall square-sectioned limestone pedestal, which has a deep cornice and a moulded foot. The pedestal is inscribed with leaded lettering.
The inscription reads: "TO THE MEMORY OF/ THE BURBAGE MEN/ WHO GAVE THEIR LIVES FOR THEIR COUNTRY/ 1914 – 1919/ (NAMES)/ GREATER LOVE HATH NO MAN THAN THIS, THAT/ A MAN LAY DOWN HIS LIFE FOR HIS FRIENDS./ (NAMES)/ THE MEN NAMED ABOVE DIED LATER/ FROM THE EFFECTS OF THE WAR/ 1914 – 1918./ IN HONOURED MEMORY OF/ THE MEN OF BURBAGE/ WHO DIED WHERE DUTY CALLED/ 1939 – 1945/ (NAMES)."
