Description
The Constitutional Club is a house that has been converted into a club, dating from the early to mid-19th century. It is constructed of red brick and features a rendered cornice with modillions and a parapet above a slate roof, which has brick stacks at both ends and one to the left of center. The building stands three storeys tall with a slight central projection and has a regular five-window front, where the outer windows on each side are paired. The second floor has three-light casements in the outer bays, with the inner windows painted to resemble glazing bar sashes, and a central Diocletian window. The first floor features bi-partite sash windows on the outer and central sections, while the inner windows are also sashes. The ground floor has flat-headed and canted windows in the center and to the right, with a nine-light casement to the left. All the windows have slightly segmental gauged heads. There are entrances to the left and right of the center, each with double round-arched surrounds and radiating fanlights, with panelled doors; the left door is part-glazed. This building was formerly the home of George Canning, who served as Prime Minister.
