Description
The Hasland War Memorial is a tall structure located inside the entrance to Eastwood Park, aligned with the park gates. It features a sculpture in white marble of a uniformed infantryman standing in front of a tree stump, holding the muzzle of his grounded rifle. The soldier, wearing a cap instead of a helmet, has a pack and other equipment hanging from his belt. He stands on the two-stage moulded cap of a tall white marble pedestal, which is square in plan. The moulded pedestal foot is set on a two-stepped sandstone base.
The main dedicatory inscription on the front face of the pedestal reads: "1914 – 1918/ TO THE GLORIOUS MEMORY/ OF THE MEN OF THIS PART/ OF THE TOWNSHIP OF HASLAND/ WHO GAVE THEIR LIVES/ IN THE CAUSE OF/ GOD, KING AND COUNTRY./ THEIR DEEDS LIVE AFTER THEM./ FAITHFUL UNTO DEATH." The names of those commemorated from the First World War are listed alphabetically on the other three faces of the pedestal.
In front of the plinth, on the uppermost base step, there is a white marble stone with the inscription: "1939 – 1945/ WE WILL REMEMBER THEM/ (NAMES)."
