Description

The North Range of Stables and Attached Gate Pier at Catton Hall is a stable block that has been converted into garages and workshops. It dates from the early 19th century and underwent conversion around 1980. The building is constructed of red brick with gauged brick dressings and features a plain painted stone band at the first floor. It has a shallow pitched, hipped concrete tile roof with wide eaves, two brick ridge stacks, and a central octagonal cupola that has a clockface at its base, open sides, and a domed roof topped with an iron weathervane.

The structure is one and a half storeys tall and consists of six bays, with a single storey advanced bay at the west end. The south elevation displays four adjoining segment-headed archways to the east, each with double plank doors. There are also three semi-circular headed doorcases featuring traceried fanlights and panelled doors to the east. Further east, there is an inserted plain sash window, and the advanced bay includes a flat arched doorcase to the east and a blocked flat arched window to the south. Above these openings, there are six semi-circular windows with 4-light casements.

At the south-west corner, there is a ramped brick wall that includes an 18th-century panelled stone gate pier at its end. Additionally, early 20th-century kennels attached to the west end of the building are noted but are of no special interest. This building forms a pair with the stables located opposite.
