Description
The South Range of Stables at Catton Hall, now used as a corn drying building and store, dates from the early 19th century and features 20th-century alterations along with a 1907 addition. Constructed from red brick with gauged brick dressings, it has a plain, painted stone band at the first floor. The building has a shallow pitched slate roof with wide eaves and a 20th-century wooden vent at the west end.
It is one and a half storeys high and consists of six bays, with an advanced single-storey bay at the west end. The north elevation includes five semi-circular headed doorcases. The central doorcase is flanked by inserted flat arched plain sash windows, while the eastern doorcase has a similar window on its east side. The western doorcase has had its gauged bricks removed and now features 20th-century iron gates. The central three doorcases have double wooden panelled doors, and the eastern doorcase includes a stable door.
The central door and the eastern door both have divided fanlights, with the fanlight to the west of the central door featuring tracery, and the fanlight to the east having a 20th-century metal hood. The advanced bay to the west has a 20th-century inserted opening facing east and a blocked flat arched window facing north. Above, there are six semi-circular windows with 4-light casements. Attached to the west end is a semi-circular brick arch from 1907, topped with a pediment. This building forms a matching pair with the stables located opposite.
