Description
The former stable block, dating from the 1850s, is a large square courtyard structure originally designed for livery stables, now repurposed as garages. It is constructed of brick with stucco dressings and features a slate roof. The building has 17 bays facing Devonshire Road, with the end and central bays protruding slightly. An entablature with a red and blue brick frieze and a parapet adorns the top. The façade includes a blind arcade with stucco elliptical arches. The end and central bays are highlighted by rusticated quoins, while the central bay features a segmental-headed entrance with a rusticated surround, a consoled cornice with antefixae, and a segmental pediment above. The stucco is noted to be much decayed as of 1984. The rear of the building, facing South Street, has a courtyard with a central block, screen walls, and gates, which have been significantly altered. It includes some segmental-headed entrances and stone pitching eyes, along with four pedimented gables visible from the street.
