Description

Number 1 Store, attached to the west side of Number 139 London Road, is a warehouse built in the early 19th century with 20th-century additions and alterations. The building is constructed of red brick and features a hipped slate roof with a stepped eaves band. It stands three storeys tall and has twelve bays. The gabled elevation facing the canal includes hoist doorways on each floor, equipped with double plank doors, and small segment-headed windows on the south side of the first and second floors. The north side retains the remains of a timber hoist. The south elevation has six small segment-headed windows on the ground floor, with doorways located between the two western windows and between the two eastern windows. There is a large corrugated iron shed to the east, along with two 20th-century windows further east. On the upper levels, there are eight similar windows and two segment-headed doorways, followed by eleven similar windows and one plank door located four bays east from the west wall. While most windows are now blocked, many still have two iron bars. This building is part of a group of industrial structures that were built after the completion of the Trent and Mersey Canal, during a time when Shardlow was a bustling inland port. It is included in the register for its group value.
