Description
The building is a former iron warehouse located south of Nos 40 and 42 The Wharf in Shardlow and Great Wilne. It dates from the late 18th century, with alterations made around 1813, and features late 19th-century additions and 20th-century modifications. Constructed of red brick with gauged brick dressings and slate roofs, the structure is a single storey plus attics and consists of seven bays, along with a single storey three-bay addition to the north.
The south elevation has a narrow recessed gabled central bay flanked by two bays on either side, each pair beneath a wide gable. To the sides, there are single slightly recessed lean-to bays. The ground floor includes seven segment-headed doorways, with the central doorway now blocked in with a 20th-century window, while the side doorways feature double plank doors. Above the five central bays are four three-light segment-headed windows, and there is an inserted plank door to the south. To the north, there are three later 19th-century gabled bays, also with segment-headed doors.
Inside, the southern two bays retain original substantial queen post trusses, supported in the center by large timber posts. There is a timber gallery at the east end and a lower gallery to the south, supported by iron columns and joists. This gallery was added around 1813 when the warehouse was converted for use as an iron merchants warehouse. The central bay has its original timber floor, and the two northern bays have original roof trusses, although the central supports have been replaced with braces into the walls. This building is one of the earliest in a series of industrial structures built after the completion of the Trent and Mersey Canal, during a time when Shardlow was a bustling inland port.
