Description

A former warehouse and boat building yard, dating from the mid-19th century, with 20th-century alterations and now used as residential accommodation. The building is constructed of red brick with a slate roof, incorporating 20th-century roof lights and stepped eaves banding. It has two storeys and four bays. The canal-facing gable has two wide segmental arches, originally designed for canal access, now partly blocked; the arch to the south has a 20th-century window, while the one to the north has double plank doors. Between these arches are two blocked 3-light timber mullioned windows. Above are four semi-circular windows with iron fan-like glazing, and above again three similar windows, with one additional window at the top of the gable. The south side features a special inlet from the canal, formerly used for boat building and unloading. The south elevation has a central full-height opening with a gabled hoist platform at the top. Ground and first floor openings are now largely blocked with 20th-century windows, but the upper part retains an original plank door with a semi-circular window above. Pairs of semi-circular windows are located at first-floor level on either side. This building is one of a group of industrial structures erected after the Trent and Mersey Canal’s completion, when Shardlow was a prosperous inland port. It is included on the list for its contribution to the group value of the area.
