Description

These are a pair of early 19th-century cottages located on Canal Bank in the parish of Shardlow and Great Wilne. The cottages are constructed of painted brick with slate roofs, featuring brick gable and ridge stacks and stepped eaves bands. They have two storeys and two bays each, with their main elevations facing the River Derwent. Each cottage has two plain sash windows on the ground floor, and a plain sash and a glazing bar sash window above. The windows on No. 5 are slightly wider spaced than those on No. 7.

The street elevation of No. 5, facing north, includes a moulded doorcase with reeded jambs and a hood, housing a 20th-century studded wooden door, and a small 20th-century lean-to. Above the door is a horizontal sliding sash window to the south and a timber cross window to the north. No. 7 has a similar doorcase with an original panelled door, a casement window to the north, and a fixed, small-pane window with a single-pane casement above the door.
