Description

The Old Salt Warehouse, located to the north-east of the Clock Warehouse on London Road, is a former salt warehouse and general warehouse that now serves as the Shardlow Heritage Centre. Built in the late 18th century, it has undergone some alterations over time. The building is constructed of red brick and features a plain tile roof with roof lights on the southern pitch.

It is two storeys high and consists of three bays. The south front, which faces the canal, has a wide two-storey opening with double doors on each floor. On the ground floor of the east side, there is a 2-light timber mullion window, while above on the west side, there are three openings below the eaves that contain a variety of windows. The street elevation to the north includes steps leading up to a plank door, which is flanked by 2-light casement windows to the west and double doors to the east, with a shuttered opening beyond.

The Old Salt Warehouse is one of the earliest buildings in a group of industrial structures that were erected after the completion of the Trent and Mersey Canal, during a time when Shardlow was a bustling inland port. The building is included in the register for its group value.
